For a school project, I was tasked with creating a motion identity based on existing branding. Being the music fan that I am. And with my wildly diverse music taste (as you might’ve already guessed), I decided to go with GentJazz, a jazz festival held in Gent, Belgium.

As I mentioned earlier, the motion identity had to be based on existing branding, and luckily, I loved the one I chose. The design features black paired with off-white, accented by subtle strings of red, green, purple, and blue. These accents are delicate and loose, giving the whole look a relaxed vibe. For my motion identity, I focused on creating contrast between sharp lines and those loose, playful shapes.

My foundation was moving words; cropped at the top and bottom and slightly slanted. This gave them a way of fitting into each other, much like jazz itself: always in motion, abstract, and unpredictable. Every now and then, a small color accent twirls into the mix, almost like a sharp, beautiful trumpet melody cutting through the chaos.
